Message: In a process known as disgorging, we froze the neck of the 2020 Pét Nat after extended aging cap down. Then we popped the cap and the pressure inside the sparkling wine bottle pushed out a frozen cube of sediment. Disgorging is a champagne style filtering process. The resulting wine is (mostly) clear of sediment and will soon be ready for release!

Message: Now that well are all familiar with Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a new chapter of the #LarkmeadLegacy begins with the Salmina family. 1895 – 1906 The Salmina family arrived in the Napa Valley from Switzerland in the 1860s, leased the Larkmead winery in 1895 and purchased it outright in 1903. Felix Salmina had a background in winemaking and quickly began converting the old wooden winery into a thriving business. By 1906, the Salminas' plan to expand was complete and the new Larkmead winery stood strong, built of stone quarried from the nearby hills. The family owned Larkmead until 1941. Message: Wine and cheese pairing tips ahead! Incorporate a few winter local selections for a cheese board during these colder months such as persimmon, pomegranate or plum for those in the Napa Valley! Our 2017 Larkmead Cabernet Sauvignon contains light notes of blue and black fruits and berries on the palate, as well as leather and tobacco elements as the wine continues to evolve. For the cheese we suggest an intense aged manchego, ideal for matching our bold Cabernet due to the fat content in the cheese and its ability to complement the tannins.

Message: Can you believe that in the early days at Larkmead in the 1900s, grapes sold for $14 a ton and wine for one cent per bottle? 1906 – 1930 Prohibition took its toll on Napa Valley wine producers in the 1920s and early 1930s, but Larkmead was able to survive by selling fruit and making sacramental wine. By January 1934, just after Prohibition was repealed,, Larkmead began releasing wine under its own label again, and quickly built back an impressive reputation. More to come, as the #LarkmeadLegacy series carries on…"

Message: You may have noticed we've been posting drone footage recently, and get excited, because there is more to come. Our #LookIntoLarkmead this month highlights the man behind the remote control, our Tasting Room Manager, Daniel Stoch @dstoch. Daniel, or Danny, as he's known here, started working for Larkmead Vineyards in August 2017 as a seasonal cellar hand with @danpetroski. Danny's start in the wine industry was supposed to be a break from the factory management position he was working at the time in Santa Cruz, CA, but turned out to be a life changing event (lucky for us!). A couple fun facts about Danny? His favorite Larkmead wine is our Solari and he loves all types of photography, and believe it or not, is a registered drone pilot.

Message: February was pruning time in our vineyard, Kerry’s Vineyard. The key was to pick a few rainless days so the open wounds created by cutting of the canes wouldn’t be exposed to soil contaminates that splash up onto the vine. February provided those few days. Now that the pruning is done, we’re anticipating that not only will the 2021 harvest in Kerry’s Vineyard be better than 2020 (smoke tainted), but will be a much lauded vintage! Stay tuned.
