Message: This year's theme for International Women's Day is Women in Leadership. We couldn't be more blessed with a better leader: Karen Fontanella When Karen graduated with a law degree from the University of San Diego in 2000, never in her wildest dreams did she imagine she'd be running a winery in Napa one day. However, her professional experience in business development, land use, and commercial real estate – coupled with her family spirit of entrepreneurship – armed Karen with the exact tools she uses today to run the daily business of Fontanella Family Winery. Her sense of community service has kept her very busy over the years here in Napa, and she’s served on nearly 10 boards including Aldea, Leadership Napa Valley, and the Mt. Veeder Appellation Council. When she's not seeing to the day-to-day operations of the winery, you can find Karen running her two sons, John and Andrew around. Message: Farming vineyards for others was how I started in wine. First as a teenager alongside my father in our Carneros vineyards, followed by working with estate owners as their vineyard manager. When the time came to make wine for my own label, I began with the land. Our 2017 cabernet sauvignons from Coombsville and Oak Knoll District each tell their unique story of how the land and farming shape our wines: power, balance, energy, and structure. Acquire only at JohnAnthonyVineyards.com.

Message: Spring reminds me that I will always be a farmer first. This season’s mustard cover crop is stunning, but to me, the vibrancy shows that it’s doing its job: protecting vineyards from erosion, encouraging water absorption, and enhancing organic matter to feed the vines. Its beauty, however, is a welcome invitation to enjoy great wines where they are made, as shown here at Church Vineyard. Arrange your experience at johnanthonyvineyards.com

Message: When I meet guests in our Tasting Lounge, I’m inevitably asked which is my favorite wine. It’s an impossible question, and my answer invariably begins with “It depends…”. My first-ever wines, the John Anthony Oak Knoll District Syrah and John Anthony Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon have boldly stood the test of time these last 15 vintages. The La Dame Michele sparkling introduced in 2016 by Michele is crisp, elegant, and of course, high on my list. But my favorite? “Well, that depends…” Allow our wine education team to help you discover your favorite John Anthony wines at JohnAnthonyVineyards.com

Message: To me, terroir is everything. It’s where I started my wine journey—in the vineyard, alongside my father. Of course, I had to leave Napa Valley to realize it’s where my heart is. Those brief years at San Diego State University and then at a start-up during the 90’s tech boom taught me to follow my passion. Fifteen years later, I still love what I do. Message: Now that well are all familiar with Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a new chapter of the #LarkmeadLegacy begins with the Salmina family. 1895 – 1906 The Salmina family arrived in the Napa Valley from Switzerland in the 1860s, leased the Larkmead winery in 1895 and purchased it outright in 1903. Felix Salmina had a background in winemaking and quickly began converting the old wooden winery into a thriving business. By 1906, the Salminas' plan to expand was complete and the new Larkmead winery stood strong, built of stone quarried from the nearby hills. The family owned Larkmead until 1941. Message: We end this month's #LarkmeadLegacy series with a teaser for next month's theme: Solari. 1948 Larry Solari was, above all, a captivating storyteller. He spoke often of his early days as a wine salesman trying to convince people across the country that wine deserved a place on the dinner table. How he got into the wine industry and became a part of Larkmead's history you may ask? Stay tuned… Pictured: Larry Solari fishing

Message: Can you believe that in the early days at Larkmead in the 1900s, grapes sold for $14 a ton and wine for one cent per bottle? 1906 – 1930 Prohibition took its toll on Napa Valley wine producers in the 1920s and early 1930s, but Larkmead was able to survive by selling fruit and making sacramental wine. By January 1934, just after Prohibition was repealed,, Larkmead began releasing wine under its own label again, and quickly built back an impressive reputation. More to come, as the #LarkmeadLegacy series carries on…"
