Harvest #2 is complete! This morning we picked half of our Cabernet vineyard (2 tons) that goes into our 2200’ blend with the other half coming off on Tuesday. Not quite halfway done with harvest this year. We love these days in this beautiful place!

On this day 120 years ago:
How many times have you seen a red carnation but not thought much about it? Red wine is very special to us, but so is the red carnation. This is why.
One of our direct ancestors, Dr. Levi Lamborn of Ohio, was an avid horticulturist. In 1886 he propagated a brand new variety of carnation which he dubbed the “Lamborn Red.” It was the world’s first scarlet red carnation. But here’s where the story gets very interesting…
Dr. Lamborn was also interested in politics and decided to run for the 18th Congressional District against his friend, William McKinley. Before each debate Lamborn gave McKinley one of his red carnations. McKinley won the election and believed that the Lamborn Red carnation was his good luck charm.
After winning several more terms in Congress, McKinley was elected to two terms as governor of Ohio and eventually ran for, and won, the Presidency in 1893. Throughout his political career McKinley spoke of the Lamborn Red that he wore on his lapel as his good luck charm.
On September 6, 1901, President McKinley stood in a receiving line to shake hands with visitors to the Buffalo Pan-American Expo. A 12 year old girl visiting with her mother asked President McKinley if he could give her something as proof that they spoke, indicating her friends would never believe her. McKinley removed the Lamborn Red from his lapel and gave it to the young girl.
Just a few seconds later, an anarchist with a .32 caliber pistol shot President McKinley twice. Despite doctors thinking he would make a full recovery from his wounds, the President died eight days later, on Sept. 14, 1901 – 120 years ago today. Three years after his assassination, Ohio voted to make the Lamborn Carnation the state flower as “a token of love and reverence to the memory of William McKinley,” spearheaded by none other than Dr. Lamborn.
Was the Lamborn Red really a good luck charm for President McKinley? The superstition in us says “perhaps,” but the blood in us says “absolutely.” Whether red carnation or red wine, we are wishing you all the best of luck, today and every day!
